Why Learn CPR?

Cardiac arrests are more common than you think. They can happen to anyone at any time.  According to the American Heart Association, nearly 383,000 out of hospital cardiac arrests occur annually.  Nearly 88 percent of cardiac arrests occur at home. Many victims appear healthy with no known heart disease or other factors making the unpredictability of cardiac arrest all the more unsettling.

However, sudden cardiac arrest is not the same as a heart attack. Sudden cardiac arrest occurs when electrical impulses in the heart become rapid or chaotic which causes the heart to suddenly stop beating.  A heart attack occurs when the blood supply to part of the heart muscle is blocked.  A heart attack has the potential to cause cardiac arrest.

Since the instances of cardiac arrest are so frequent and unpredictable, the answer to "Why Learn CPR?" is that the life you save may be that of someone close to you.  In fact, approximately four out of five cardiac arrests occur at home.  Statistically speaking, if you are called on to administer CPR in an emergency situation, the life you save is likely to be someone at home: a child, a spouse, a parent, or a friend.

If you are a healthcare provider you could be called on to administer CPR at any time and possibly multiple times a day.  Staying current with CPR, AED, and First Aid training is a must for anyone in the healthcare field.  Whether you are a nurse, chiropractor, dentist, veterinarian, or any other type of healthcare professional you will likely be the first person called on in an emergency situation.  Stay prepared by keeping your training current.
